Mission
The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow servicemembers and veterans. The American Legion is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization with great political influence perpetuated by its grass-roots involvement in the legislation process from local districts to Capitol Hill. Legionnaires’ sense of obligation to community, state and nation drives an honest advocacy for veterans in Washington. The Legion stands behind the issues most important to the nation's veterans community, backed by resolutions passed by volunteer leadership.
Profile
The George Bedford Post 169 of the American Legion is currently 51 members strong and is active in the schools, community, and assisting veterans. We sponsor several monetary youth scholarships for attendance to colleges, universities, and vocational schools. We are also involved in teaching classes about flag etiquette, veterans's experiences, civics, and 911 remembrance. Additionally, we provide funding for Boy's State, Girl's State, Oratorical Competition, and Cadet Law Training. In the community, Post members are actively involved in local government, business leaders, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Lion's Club, Museum, Library, and other local volunteer organizations both in Blue Rapids and Marshall County. We assist veterans by providing assistance in applications for both VA Disability Compensation and VA Healthcare. We encourage all veterans to take advantage of the benefits which they have earned through military service. We have a Honor Guard and Color Guard to assist in providing military honors to our fallen heroes. We spend many hours driving veterans and their family members to appointments, assisting with household tasks, helping them move, and visiting them in nursing homes. We are committed to the four pillars of the American Legion: Youth, Americanism, Security, and Veterans.
